SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Omaha women’s basketball team ended the 2017-18 season on Sunday afternoon, as the sixth-seeded Mavericks dropped a 97-57 decision to third-seeded Western Illinois in the Summit League Tournament Quarterfinals at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
Leaders for Omaha
Junior Amber Vidal scored a team-high 23 points on 10-of-22 shooting including three 3-pointers. Junior Jess Walter added 11 points and three rebounds. Junior Courtney Vaccher grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with six points and two assists.
Leaders for Western Illinois
Emily Clemens had a game-high 36 points on 12-of-13 shooting including a 9-of-10 performance at the free throw line. Taylor Higginbotham added 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sam Pryor pitched in 12 points.
Western Illinois shot .576 (38-of-66) from the floor compared to Omaha’s .367 (22-of-60). The Mavericks held a 36-35 advantage on the boards.
Inside the First Half
UNO and WIU exchanged baskets to open the game with the Mavericks holding a 6-5 lead on a 3-pointer from Walter. Western Illinois used a 10-3 spurt to open up a six-point lead with 5:28 left in the period. A trey from Claire Killian followed by an Alicia Mountain jumper brought UNO within 18-16 with under four minutes left in the opening quarter. A quick 6-0 WIU run put the Fighting Leathernecks ahead by seven but a Walter 3-pointer with 11 seconds on the clock cut the deficit to 24-20 after the first ten minutes.
Western Illinois held Omaha without a basket for the first 4:37 of the second quarter and built its lead to 36-20. Another WIU spurt pushed the lead to 28 with under three minutes left in the first half. The Fighting Leathernecks led 56-26 at the half.
Inside the Second Half
Western Illinois shot .556 (10-of-18) compared to Omaha’s .353 (6-of-17) from the field in the third quarter. The Fighting Leathernecks opened the second half with a 13-7 spurt and led 77-39 at the end of three quarters.
WIU surged in front 90-46 with 5:45 left in regulation. Omaha fought back with a 3-pointer by Mountain and a jumper by Vidal. A Sara Echelberry free throw made the final score 97-57.
Noting Tonight’s Game
– Omaha finished the season at 12-16.
– The Mavericks are now 2-3 all-time at the Summit League Tournament.
– Amber Vidal scored in double figures for the 15th time this season and surpassed the 20 point mark for the ninth time.
– Courtney Vaccher led Omaha in rebounding for the 18th time and reached double-digit rebounds for the sixth time.
