GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Omaha women’s basketball team dropped a 68-57 decision to North Dakota at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
With the loss, the Mavericks are now 6-10 on the season and 1-3 in Summit League play, while the Fighting Hawks improved to 8-9 (3-1).
Leaders for Omaha
Elena Pilakouta led the Mavericks with a team-high 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Claire Killian added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals. Sophie Johnston scored nine points, while Josie Filer chipped in five points, six boards and two steals.
Leader for North Dakota
Julia Fleecs scored a game-high 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the floor, adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Alaina Jarnot went for 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Jarnot added four rebounds and five assists. Melissa Leet chipped in nine points, six boards and four blocked shots.
Omaha shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the floor and 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from behind the 3-point line. The Mavericks converted 69.6 percent (16-of-23) of its free throws. UNO held a 24-20 advantage in points in the paint.
North Dakota shot40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the field, including a 46.2 percent (6-of-13) showing from beyond the arc. The Fighting Hawks converted 61.5 percent (8-of-13) of their free throws. UND held a 43-36 advantage in rebounding and blocked six shots.
Inside the First Half
North Dakota raced out to an 8-3 lead in the opening 3:34 of the first quarter. A Pilakouta layup followed by a 3-pointer by Johnston tied the game at 8-8 at the 4:18 mark. The Fighting Hawks outscored the Mavericks 6-3 the rest of the period to lead 14-11 after the opening 10 minutes.
The Mavericks cut the lead to 19-16 with 6:04 left in the first half on a three-point play by Mariah Murdie. UND responded with a 7-0 run to push the lead to double-figures for the first time at 26-16. Omaha did not get closer than six points the rest of the period and trailed 31-22 at halftime.
Inside the Second Half
Omaha chipped away at the North Dakota lead early in the third quarter. The Mavericks opened the frame with a 7-2 spurt to get within 33-29 and trailed 36-32 with 6:17 remaining. UND responded with nine of the next 10 points and took a 54-43 edge into the fourth quarter.
North Dakota opened the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run to push the lead to 60-45. The Mavericks got within nine points twice in the final three minutes, but each time the Fighting Hawks had an answer and came away with the 68-57 victory.
The Mavericks return to action next Wednesday, Jan. 16, against Western Illinois. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Macomb, Ill.
