Omaha Women rally to beat Cal State Bakersfield

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women’s basketball team earned a 53-46 comeback win over CSU Bakersfield Sunday at Baxter Arena.

With the win, the Mavericks improved to 5-4 on the season while the Roadrunners are now 4-5.

Leaders for Omaha
Rayanna Carter scored a game-high 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor to lead the Mavericks.  Elena Pilakouta added 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.

Josie Filer grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points and three steals.  Sophie Johnston chipped in seven points and five boards.

Leaders for CSU Bakersfield
Malayasia McHenry led the Roadrunners with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.  Alexxis Gilbert and Jazmine Johnson each scored nine.

Team Stats
Omaha shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field while CSU Bakersfield shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the floor.  The Mavericks hit 69.9 percent (16-of-23) from the free throw line compared to 57.1 percent (8-of-14) by the Roadrunners at the line.  UNO held a 42-32 rebounding advantage, including an 18-12 edge on the offensive edge glass.

Inside the First Half
Omaha led most of the first quarter despite shooting only 25 percent from the field.  Claire Killian gave the Mavericks a 5-4 as she completed a three-point play.  A Johnson jumper gave the Roadrunners a brief lead until Filer completed UNO’s second three-point play of the period for an 8-6 lead with under three minutes remaining.  CSUB held UNO scoreless the final 2:59 and took a 10-8 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Omaha tied the game early in the second quarter at 10-10.  CSU Bakersfield responded with a 5-0 spurt to retake the lead.  The Mavericks got within 18-17 with 2:58 left in the half on a Mariah Murdie free throw.  The Roadrunners pushed their lead to six points on a McHenry layup.  Filer then hit a pair of free throws to cut the halftime deficit to 25-21.

Inside the Second Half
Omaha used a 24 point, 7-of-16 shooting, third quarter to go from four down at the half to up by 10 heading into the fourth quarter.  Pilakouta scored six straight points early in the third quarter as UNO capped a 6-1 surge to regain the lead.  McHenry briefly put the Roadrunners back in front 28-27 before Filer led a 5-0 outburst that put the Mavericks ahead by four midway through the period.  Later in the quarter, Carter scored six straight and Pilakouta added a free throw to put Omaha in front 42-31.  Carter ended the period with a pair of free throws and the Mavericks took a 45-35 lead heading into the fourth.

Omaha did not allow CSU Bakersfield any closer than five points in the fourth quarter.  The Mavericks took their biggest lead of the game, 47-35, early in the period on an Alicia Mountain basket.  CSUB put together a 9-2 run over the next 5:15 to close within 49-44.  UNO held CSUB to two points the rest of the way to secure the 53-46 victory.

•    Omaha held CSU Bakersfield to 29.2 percent shooting from the field and did not allow a three-pointer in the second half.
•    UNO outrebounded its opponent for the fourth straight game.
•    Carter led the Mavericks in scoring for the fourth straight game.
•    Pilakouta scored in double-figures for the sixth time this season while Filer reached double-digit boards for the third time.
