KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2016-17 Division II Women’s Basketball All-America teams. Midland University’s Joelle Overkamp received honorable mention recognition.
“This is such a great honor for Joelle,” said head coach Shawn Gilbert. “Not only is it well-deserved recognition for her, but also for our program as she embodies the culture of family basketball that we stand for. Joelle is the true definition of a student-athlete as her dedication both on and off the court have been awarded this season.”
Overkamp, a 2017 First Team All-GPAC selection, garners All-American status for the first time in her career. The junior from Papillion, Nebraska led Midland in scoring this season while joining the Lady Warriors’ 1,000-point club.
Overkamp averaged 16.9 points per game which ranked third in the GPAC. She also led Midland in rebounds (181) a recorded a career-best 75 steals. Her takeaway total ranked 23rd in the NAIA.
Overkamp shot a career-best 47 percent from the field and concluded the season with 1,155 points in her Warrior career which currently ranks 20th all-time in program history.
The 2017 NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team earlier this season.
Overkamp’s veteran leadership was vital in helping lead Midland to a 15-15 record this year which is the first .500 or better finish for the team since the 2002-03 campaign.
