YORK – York fell behind by one run twice in the ball game, but a two-run third inning was all the Panthers needed to escape with the one run win 3-2.

Game 1 Turning Point
After a leadoff single by Breianna Cortez (FR/Lubbock, Texas), the Spires picked up two quick outs. But a walk to Laura Leos (JR/Wilmington, Calif.) put the Panthers in scoring position. The two-out single by Lia Hamamoto (FR/Long Beach, Calif.) scored Brittany Juarez (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.), before a double by Mikayla Lawrence (JR/Lake Elsinore, Calif.) scored the go ahead run. Alysia Rodriguez (JR/Canyon Lake, Calif.) pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless softball to pick up the win.

Game 1 Individual Leaders
Mikayla Lawrence (2-3, 2B, RBI), Lia Hamamoto (1-3, RBI), Briana Walter (FR/Ralston, Neb.) (1-3, RBI, 2B)

York committed five errors in the game, yet they still had a chance to win the game in the seventh after Briana Walter was on third with just one out. The Spires however shut down the Panthers and moved into extra innings. With the international tie-break rule in effect, the Spires were able to score on two bunts in the top of the eighth. York stranded their runner on third after two ground outs ended the ball game.

Game 2 Turning Point
York was looking to take the lead in the sixth inning after an error put Hamamoto on first with no outs. A sac bunt advanced Hamamoto over before Anissia Munoz (SR/Fresno, Calif.) singled to center. With runners on the corner and one out the Panthers were in business. However, Samantha Adami (JR/Hayward, Calif.)’s soft grounder back to the pitcher ended the inning. Cierra Montalvo, pinch running for Hamamoto, was thrown out at the plate, and then Munoz was thrown out returning to second as the center fielder snuck up behind for the tag.

Game 2 Individual Leaders
Samantha Adami (1-3, 3 RBI, HR, R), Lia Hamamoto (2-3, R), Alyssa Ruiz (SO/Fresno, Calif.) (1-4, 2B)
