Wakefield-The Pender Seniors American Legion Baseball Team is headed to State as they defeated Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells 14-3 in 5 innings in the C-2 Area Tournament Championship in Wakefield Tuesday night.
Pender struck for two runs in the top half of the 1st inning before Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells added 2 in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at 2-2 after one.
Pender added two more runs in the 3rd inning after a scoreless 2nd to go up 4-2, and went up 7-2 with 3 more runs in the 4th.
Pender blew the doors open and put the finishing touches on things in the 5th, compiling 7 runs.
Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells scored their final run in the home half of the 5th to make up the final score.
For Pender, Brady Oliver got on base 4 times, scored 4 runs, and recorded an RBI while Layne Heese , Aaron Ras, Will Gatzemeyer, and Nolan Ostrand, who pinch ran for Catcher Jacob Zuhlke, scored 2 runs apiece.
Korrell Koehlmoos was 2-3 with an RBI for Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells while Dax VanLengen also recorded a hit and scored a run. Starting Pitcher Zack Mauch, who took the loss, also recorded a hit and an RBI.
Jordan Springer went the distance in picking up the win for Pender, who improves to 16-6 on the season. Wisner-Pilger-Dodge-Howells ends their year at 13-10.
Pender advances to State, and will play Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday in Albion. All of Pender’s State Games can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
