Schaben Leads Cyclones Past Oklahoma

NORMAN, Oklahoma – A dominant performance by Jess Schaben led No. 23 Iowa State to a 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-22) sweep of Oklahoma Wednesday night at McCasland Field House. The win improved the Cyclones to 19-6 overall on the season, 9-5 in Big 12 play. OU is now 7-19 overall, 4-9 in league play.

Schaben did it all for the Cyclones, finishing with a match-high and tying a season-high of 18 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Avery Rhodes tied her career-high with 10 kills at a .571 hitting percentage and eight blocks. Monique Harris had a double-double of 42 assists and 13 digs, Hali Hillegas also finished with 13 digs in the win.

First Set: Iowa State 28 Oklahoma 26
The Cyclone serve struggled early on in the frame as the Cyclones were unable to stay ahead due to four service errors in OU’s first eight points. The visitors fell behind three at 11-8, but used a pair of blocks to knot it back up at 11-11. On the serve of Genesis Miranda, ISU went on a 5-0 run to get ahead 17-14. The Sooners did not give up, eventually tying the set back up at 23-23. The Cyclones had to fight off two Oklahoma set points, but Grace Lazard was able to lock it down, recording consecutive aces to end the set at 28-26 Cyclones.

Second Set: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 18
After nine first-set kills, Jess Schaben continued to power the Cyclone offense. The junior got four of ISU’s first eight points in the set via three kills and a block, and then went behind the service line to run three-straight to put the Cyclones ahead 11-8. The ISU offense rolled again, as the Cyclones hit .429 for the frame, with Schaben leading the way with six kills in the frame. ISU moved ahead 2-0 when Avery Rhodes put down her fifth kill of the night at 25-18, Cyclones.

Third Set: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 22
Both sides struggled to find breathing room in the first half of the set, but ISU eventually benefitted from its balanced attack to open up a gap. A 3-0 run put ISU ahead 14-11, and that would be enough of a gap for the Cyclones. The offense did its job again, as ISU hit .318 as a team for the frame, while the Cyclone block continued to stifle OU, finishing the set with 3.5 total blocks. Iowa State wrapped up the sweep when Samara West powered down a kill at 25-22, ISU.
