Scottsbluff took the drama out of their playoff opener on Friday night early in a 69-21 win over Ralston.
The Bearcats scored their first touchdown just a minute into the game.
They’d score 8 more times in the first half.
The Class B #2 seed, Scottsbluff scored on their third play of the game as junior quarterback Sabastian Harsh ran one in from 13 yards out and after Caleb Walker made the PAT it was 7-0.
Scottsbluff scored three more times in the first quarter as Harsh would score again on a 40 yard run followed by a Keegan Reifschneider 60 yard interception return for a touchdown, and then a Chris Busby 1 yard touchdown run.
28-0 Scottsbluff at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was just absolutely nutty with the two teams combining to score 55 points.
Scottsbluff got the scoring started with a Chris Busby 52 yard run. Busby would score his third touchdown of the night on a 1 yard run a little later in the stanza.
Harsh would be involved in the other three second half scores. He scored twice on the ground; 8 and 13 yard runs, and he connected with Reifschneider on a 26 yard score just before halftime to finish off a 62 point first half explosion.
Scottsbluff Offensive Coordinator, Jud Hall, did not see this type of game playing out, “No absolutely not, you know you just hope to control the ball, eat up clock, pick up first downs, and find a way to score when you get the opportunity in the playoffs. That’s what we try and do, control the ball, don’t turn it over and score when you have the opportunity.”
The real oddity in this game was the Ralston second quarter scoring spree. The Rams quarterback to receiver combination of Isaac Dannehl to Michael Heig hooked up for touchdowns on three consecutive plays from scrimmage covering 29, 66, and 67 yards; all in the second quarter.
Scottsbluff led at halftime 62-21.
With the running clock for the second half there were limited scoring opportunities with the lone points coming for Scottsbluff in the third quarter on a Jacob Krul 52 yard run (Walker connected on 9 of 10 extra points in the game).
All things told it was Scottsbluff cruising to a 69-21 win.
Busby finished with 165 yards rushing while Harsh added 163 yards on the ground. Harsh had 115 yards passing with the one touchdown.
With the win Scottsbluff will host Omaha Roncalli next week in a quarterfinal matchup at Bearcat Stadium, “With scouting Ralston we were able to see Roncalli on film. I know they have a tremendous athlete on both sides of the ball, a kid that’s going to Nebraska to play baseball. They’ll spread you out on offense, like to throw it. It’s going to be a battle”, Coach Hall said.
The player Coach Hall was referring to is Alex Rodgers, who entering the postseason had run for 887 yards and 16 touchdowns and Rodgers also had 672 yards receiving with another 10 touchdowns.
