Softball: Gering drops one to Chadron, Scottsbluff game suspended

On local softball diamonds Tuesday night there was plenty of bad weather to deal with. At Gering they got the game in, at Scottsbluff they had to put one on hold.

We’ll start over in Gering where Chadron got a big win over the Lady Bulldogs 12-3. The two teams had to deal with a little lightning and weather delay that lasted a little over an hour starting in the top of the sixth inning.

It was the work Chadron did before the delay that got them into the win column.

Kaitlyn Haug hit the second pitch of the ballgame from Jacey Marietta for a home run and after an error Dana Dunbar hit a line shot out of the park to center field and it was 3-0 Chadron before Gering could blink.

Dunbar had a huge night. At the plate she finished 4-5 with three RBI, four runs scored and the homer. In the circle she got the pitching win holding Gering down to just the three runs. She struck out five and walked seven, allowing a total of five hits.

Not a lot of offense for Gering in this one. Delany Dean smoked a two run double in the bottom of the fifth. Dean was on base three of her four trips to the plate on the night. Kaetlynn Todd scored twice and finished 2-4 at the dish.

Marietta wasn’t at her best, allowing 12 runs, 9 of those were earned. At times she was let down by some poor defense, especially in the second inning when Gering committed three errors.

Chadron improves to 2-7 while Gering dropped to 5-4. Both teams will be at the Scottsbluff Invitational Friday and Saturday.

They weren’t as lucky, weather wise last night, over at Scottsbluff High School as Scottsbluff and Alliance had their game suspended due to weather in the fourth inning with Scottsbluff leading 6-5. They’ll finish that game on Saturday at the conclusion of the Scottsbluff Invitational. Scottsbluff and Chadron play the final game of the day and then they’ll resume this suspended game.
