KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2016-17 Division II Men’s Basketball All-America teams. Midland University’s Damon Overton and Alex Starkel each conclude their careers with All-American honorable mention honors.

“I’m very pleased that the All-America Committee selected Damon and Alex for this well-deserved honor,” said head coach Oliver Drake. “These two were vital pieces in the success our team had this season. They are two talented and unselfish players who gelled in just one season together and helped lead us to the national tournament. It’s a great accomplishment for them to end what truly were All-American careers.”

Overton transferred to Midland for the 2016-17 campaign for his final season of eligibility while beginning work on his Master’s degree. The East Moline, Illinois native posted a career-best 490 points with the Warriors this season to earn All-American honors for the first time in his career.

Overton averaged 15.8 points per game which ranked 13th in the GPAC this year. He led Midland with 127 assists which ranked fifth in the conference and 44th in the country. His assist/turnover ratio (3.02) ranked ninth in the NAIA. Overton was also a 2016-17 All-GPAC First Team selection.

Starkel receives All-American status for the second time in his career. The Norfolk, Nebraska native was previously a 2014-15 Second Team All-American.

Starkel led the Warriors and ranked 10th in the GPAC with 16.2 points per game this season. The senior center also averaged 2.4 assists and 5.6 rebounds per contest. He ranked 25th in the NAIA this year by shooting 58.5 percent from the field. Starkel, a four-time All-GPAC recipient, concludes his stellar career with 1,892 points at Midland which ranks third all-time in program history.

Midland finished the season with a record of 21-10 while making its fourth NAIA DII Men’s Basketball National Championship appearance in the past five seasons.
