Swedes Hold On To Beat Lexington In Prep Softball

Gothenburg – The Lexington Minutemaids loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but were unable to push any runs across as Gothenburg won the second game of the series 11-9.

Lexington’s McKenna Johnson struck out 12 Swedes and only gave up two earned runs. However, the Minutemaids committed five errors leading to 11 Gothenburg runs.

Lauren Cardenas was the offensive star for the Swedes. She went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, including two doubles.

Karleigh Kleinknecht was the winning pitcher for Gothenburg she give up three earned runs over seven innings.

Gothenburg was leading 8-2 going into the fifth inning when Lexington erupted for four runs and made it a two-run game (8-6). Gothenburg increased their lead to three runs going into the seventh.

Lexington’s Maddi Sutton led off the seventh with a home-run over the left field fence to drop the deficit back to two runs. The Minutemaids then loaded the bases with two outs. Johnson hit a ground ball to Gothenburg’s Kasey Wellmann who collected it and threw it to Cameron McQuade, at first, to end the threat and notch the win  for the Swedes.

Gothenburg moves to 5-2 on the year; Lexington falls to 3-4.
