STANTON – We had high school basketball on 107.9 The Bull Thursday night, Feb. 1, covering the East Husker Conference girls semifinals from Stanton. In the first game. North Bend Central defeated West Point-Beemer 35-31. The Tigers held an early 7-4 advantage, but the Cadets then went on a run that had them leading 14-9 after the first quarter and 23-18 at halftime. However, West Point-Beemer was held to just eight points offensively in the second half, helping secure the win for North Bend. Kristin Lux led the Tigers with 11 points, while Brittney Hinkel scored 10 for the Cadets.
The second semifinal was full of drama as Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur was able to hand hand Stanton just its second loss of the season in a double overtime thriller, 48-40. BRLD led 8-6 after the first quarter, but took a 16-6 lead into halftime when Stanton was held scoreless in the second. BRLD had a scoreless quarter of their own, when they failed to produce a point in the third, giving Stanton the 18-16 advantage after three quarters. BRLD had a chance to win the game tied a 31-31 with one second left in regulation, but couldn’t convert from the free throw line, sending the game into overtime. Both teams scored four points in the first OT period, making it 35-35. BRLD was able to outscore Stanton 13-5 in the second OT period, pulling away for the win. Jessie Brandl scored 12 points for Stanton. Vicki Gatzemeyer led BRLD with 17 points, and Paige Peters added 16.
BRLD and NBC will meet for the girls East Husker Conference Championship on Saturday at CCC in Columbus.
