UNO Baseball falls to Oral Roberts in regular season finale

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha baseball program fell 13-9 in the regular season series finale Saturday afternoon at Seymour Smith Park.

The game also marked Senior Day, as Andrew Brighton, Thomas DeBonville, Tyler Daugherty, Ben Palensky, Braden Rogers, Payton Kinney, Grant Suponchick, Andrew Brighton and Jonas Lovin were recognized prior to the game with their friends and family.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
ORU’s Sam Rainwater improved to 2-0 with the win in relief, while Suponchick fell to 2-1. The Golden Eagles’ Hunter Swift earned his first save of the season. DeBonville had a game-high four hits in five at-bats with two runs and an RBI. Suponchick registered two hits with two RBI and a home run, while Keil Krumwiede had three RBI on two hits. Parker Smejkal notched the second Omaha homer on his 1-for-4 effort.

INSIDE THE INNINGS
ORU homered in the top of the first for a pair of runs. The lead increased to 5-0 over Omaha after a pair of doubles in the second. Omaha got on the board in the second after RBI-singles from Lombardi and Krumwiede that cut the ORU lead to 5-4 after three.

A sacrifice fly by the Golden Eagles put them back up 6-4, but Omaha responded with a two-shot homer from Suponchick that evened it up in the fifth. Right after, the Mavericks took their first lead of the game, 7-6, on DeBonville’s single and an ORU throwing error that scored Rogers.

The lead did not hold, however, as Oral Roberts plated five runs in the sixth to take an 11-7 lead. Omaha saw some late momentum fall in its favor on Smejkal’s solo-shot homer and Krumwiede’s single-RBI that made it an 11-9 game, but two more Golden Eagle runs in the ninth made the gap too big for the Mavericks to overcome.

NEXT UP
Omaha concludes the regular season as the No. 1 seed in next week’s Summit League Championship. The Mavericks take on the No. 4 seed Western Illinois Wednesday, May 22, at noon.
