Wayne State falls at Minnesota-Duluth

#6 Minnesota Duluth hit a sizzling .446 in the final two sets to finish off #18 Wayne State College in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played Friday evening in Duluth, Minnesota. Scores of the match were 25-9, 18-25, 25-22 and 25-10. WSC drops to 7-5 on the year and 2-2 in the NSIC while UMD is now 11-1 and 4-0 in league play.

The first set was all UMD as the host Bulldogs limited WSC to just two kills while serving up six aces to post a 25-9 set win.

Wayne State bounced back in the second set and evened the match with a 25-18 set win thanks to 11 kills and just two attack errors and a .290 attack percentage. Sophomore Katie Stephens led a balanced Wildcat effort at the net with three kills and four digs while Bree Ackermann and Stephens each recorded service aces.

The third set saw the team teams exchange 12 ties and four lead changes. The Wildcats held a 20-19 lead, but could not overcome three straight UMD kills for a 22-20 lead as the Bulldogs went on to post a 25-22 set win.

UMD then hit a scorching .615 in the fourth set with 17 kills and just one error on 26 attempts to finish off the Wildcats 25-10 for a 3-1 match win.

Minnesota Duluth ended the match with a .341 attack percentage to .073 for the Wildcats. The Bulldogs held a 7-5 edge in blocks over WSC and had eight service aces and 13 service errors compared to four aces and four service errors on the Wildcats.

Senior Erin Gross led the Wildcats at the net with nine kills followed by Stephens with six. Haley Kauth and Alyssa Ballenger each accounted for 10 digs with setter Megan Gebhardt credited for 22 set assists.

Wayne State will be in action again Saturday afternoon, visiting St. Cloud State in a 1 p.m. NSIC contest.
