Wayne State men down Nebraska Christian

Wayne State College had four players score in double figures and 13 out of 14 players score in a 86-47 non-conference men’s basketball win Tuesday evening over Nebraska Christian College at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats improve to 6-3 on the season while the game was an exhibition contest for the 9-2 Sentinels.

Junior guard Vance Janssen got the Wildcats off to a quick start, scoring the first 10 points of the game to give WSC a 10-0 lead just 2:28 into the contest.

The Sentinels overcame the slow start and thanks to seven straight points from DJ Hanes, Nebraska Christian got as close as six at 19-13 at the 10:18 mark of the first half.

WSC responded with another 10-0 run to go in front 29-13. The Sentinels then scored seven straight points and was within nine at 29-20 with 4:35 left in the half before WSC closed the half with a 40-24 lead at intermission.

The Wildcats maintained a double-digit lead in the second half and pulled away at the midway point, outscoring Nebraska Christian 46-23 in the second half, to finish with the 86-47 victory.

Senior Brian Goodwin led four Wildcats in double figures with 14 points. Junior Trevin Joseph added 12 with Janssen and Tony Bonner both contributing 10 points in the win.

Wayne State finished the game making 31 of 60 shots for 51.7 percent. The ‘Cats were 6 of 17 from 3-point range and 18 of 29 at the free throw line.

DJ Hanes poured in 11 points, all in the first half, to lead Nebraska Christian College offensively.

The Sentinels connected on 18 of 60 shots for 30 percent, going 4 for 19 behind the 3-point line, and 7 of 15 at the charity stripe.

WSC held a sizeable 42-14 advantage on points in the paint and held a 44-41 edge in rebounding over the Sentinels thanks to six rebounds from Goodwin and Bonner. Janssen had three assists to lead WSC while Joseph recorded a team-best three steals.

The Wildcats will return to Northern Sun Conference play this weekend, hosting the University of Mary Friday night at 8 p.m. and Minot State Saturday in a 6 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
