Freshman Maddie Moser fired a complete game four-hitter with seven strikeouts to power Wayne State College in a 4-2 win Monday afternoon over Notre Dame College of Ohio in a non-conference college softball game played at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. WSC is now 3-5 on the year while the Falcons slip to 0-2.
WSC scored two runs in the bottom of the first as Katleyn Wobken singled and scored on a wild pitch while Emily Chandler singled and scored on a Rachel Shumakersingle for a 2-0 Wildcat advantage.
After the Falcons answered with two runs in the top of the second, WSC took the lead for good in the bottom of the second on a Jordyn Breitbarth solo homer for a 3-2 lead.
WSC added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Morgan Vasa singled and scored on an Alyx Hagen sacrifice fly to close out the scoring in the Wildcat 4-2 victory.
Wayne State held an 8-4 edge in hits over Notre Dame College. Breitbarth was 2 for 3 with a homer while Chandler finished 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Wobken, Vasa, Shumaker and Raquel Penke each singled.
Moser improved to 1-2 on the season with her complete game victory, working seven innings and allowing just two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
#13 Southern Indiana scored at least one run in all but one inning as the Eagles flew past Wayne State College 9-4 in a non-conference college softball game played Monday afternoon in sunny, 75-degree Clermont, Florida at the National Training Center Spring Games. USI is now 10-5 on the season while WSC falls to 3-6.
The Screaming Eagles scored single runs in the first and second innings plus four more in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-0 lead.
WSC mounted a rally with a four-run top of the fifth inning to get within two at 6-4. Katelyn Wobken and Emily Chandler produced RBI singles for the first two runs. Alyx Hagen followed with an RBI groundout while Rachel Shumaker belted a run-scoring triple.
USI regained momentum in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to take an 8-4 lead and scored another run in the sixth inning for the 9-4 victory.
Southern Indiana finished the game with 15 hits compared to nine for the Wildcats.
Wobken and Chandler each went 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored to lead the Wildcat offense. Ashley Hernandez was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles with Shumaker adding an RBI triple and Jordyn Breitbarth doubling.
Junior Riley Vanderveen (1-2) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing nine runs (six earned) while throwing all six innings with four strikeouts and three walks.
Wayne State resumes play on Wednesday with two games at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida as the Wildcats meet Stonehill (Mass.) at 8 a.m. and Lewis (Ill.) in a 10:30 a.m. contest.
