Wayne State dropped a pair of games against Southwest Minnesota State 7-1 and 3-2 Wednesday afternoon in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader at the Schwan Regional Event Center in Marshall, Minnesota. SMSU is now 13-22 and 8-12 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 15-25 and 9-12 in conference play.
Game one saw the Mustangs take an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. SMSU used a bases loaded RBI groundout by catcher Mackenzie Clouse to score their first run of the day.
WSC responded with a run of their own in the top of the second when Rachel Shumaker tripled down the right field line and scored on an RBI single by Abbie Hix to right field.
The game remained knotted 1-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth before Southwest Minnesota State erupted for six runs to reclaim the lead and secure a 7-1 game one victory. The Mustangs were able to score six runs on four hits and one Wildcat error in the fifth inning.
Freshman Maddie Moser was tagged with the loss (5-10), allowing six earned runs and six hits in four innings of work. Sophomore Allison Niemeier and junior Alyx Hagen each worked one inning of scoreless relief.
The Wildcats were only able to produce one run on eight hits in the contest. Senior Rachel Shumaker and junior Morgan Vasa paced WSC both going 2 for 3. Katelyn Wobken, Abbie Hix, Taylor Menard and Jordyn Breitbarth also collected hits for Wayne State.
The ‘Cats got on the board right away in the second game of the twinbill. Wobken led off the game with a ground-rule double to left center and scored on an RBI single by junior first baseman Emily Chandler to take an early 1-0 lead.
SMSU followed suit in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a Bailey Johnson single to the right side that scored Emma Grote.
The Mustangs were able to tack on another run in the second inning to take control of the game 2-1. SMSU used three hits to score a run. With a runner on third, centerfielder Abbie Decker singled to right center to plate Madison Krog.
Wayne State evened the score 2-2 in the fifth inning thanks to Morgan Vasa and Emily Chandler. Vasa singled through the left side and scored when Chandler singled to left field.
Once again, the Mustangs responded with a run in the same inning. Decker led off with a single up the middle and later scored to give SMSU the lead 3-2 after a double to right center by shortstop Kali Tomlinson.
WSC was held hitless in the final two frames, allowing Southwest Minnesota State to earn the sweep.
Junior Riley Vanderveen was tagged with the loss (7-12) after giving up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out four in five innings. Moser pitched one inning of relief, allowing one hit and no runs.
The Wildcats scattered eight hits in game two. Wobken, Vasa and Chandler each gathered two hits for WSC with Chandler batting in two runs. Menard and Breitbarth also had hits for WSC.
WSC will close out the regular season this weekend with NSIC doubleheaders at Minnesota Duluth Saturday (1 p.m.) and St. Cloud State Sunday (1 p.m.).
