WEST POINT – The West Point Senior Legion baseball team met Wayne in the B5 area tournament in West Point Sunday night, July 22, in an elimination game heard on 107.9 The Bull.
Wayne scored three runs right away in the first inning and led 4-1 after the second.
West Point scored four runs in the top half of the fourth inning, taking a 5-4 lead.
That lead was short lived, however, as Wayne erupted for 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning, leaping out to a 14-5 lead.
West Point chipped away in the fifth, adding two runs to cut the deficit to 14-7, before a big scoring rally of their own, scoring eight runs in the sixth for a 15-14 lead.
West Point led 15-14 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Wayne loaded the bases thanks to an error, a hit batter and a fielder’s choice, and was able to tie the game 15-15, before scoring the final run on a passed ball to win the game 16-15, eliminating West Point from the tournament.
For West Point, Chase Streeter had three hits and an RBI, Jared Minnick had two hits and four RBIs, Austin Streeter had two doubles and two RBIs, Greg Johnson and Cole Kreikemeier each had two hits and two RBIs and Peyton Landholn recorded a double and a single.
Greg Johnson took the pitching loss in relief, allowing two runs on two walks. Austin Streeter was the starter, going 3.2 innings, allowing 10 runs on nined hits and three walks, striking out four. Tate Ernesti pitched 1.1 innings of middle relief, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out two.
Wayne Advances to play Wahoo Monday night at 7:00, while the season ends for West Point.
