WSC Baseball swept at home by Minot State

Minot State completed a four-game NSIC baseball series sweep Friday afternoon over Wayne State College with two more heartbreaking losses at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex. The Beavers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh in the opener for a 7-6 win and erased a 3-0 deficit to rally with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for a 5-3 win over the Wildcats in the second game. Minot State is now 14-10 and 12-2 in the NSIC while Wayne State falls to 8-14 and 6-6.

The Beavers held a 2-0 lead entering the third inning in the opener when WSC struck for four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Travis Miller had a two-run single to go with run-scoring singles by Bryce Bisenius and David Janes.

WSC took a 5-2 led in the top of the fifth on a Bisenius RBI single up the middle scoring Andrew Hanson.

Minot State began their comeback with two runs in the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.

Wayne State used back-to-back doubles with two outs from Bisenius and Miller to put the ‘Cats ahead 6-5.

But the Beavers handed Wayne State a third straight one-run setback by producing two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 7-6 win.

The ‘Cats had nine hits in the contest, led by Bisenius going 3 for 4 with two RBI while Miller finished 2 for 4 with three RBI. Janes, Hanson, Garrett Graveline and Jackson Petersen each had singles.

Starter Hunter Wienhoff worked the first five innings and allowed four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Isaac Rubendall pitched one inning of relief while sophomore reliever Lawson Zenner (1-3) suffered the loss, charged with two runs on two hits with two walks.

The second game saw WSC build a 3-0 lead early, but the cardiac Beavers came back one more time and completed the weekend sweep with a 5-3 victory.

WSC scored one run in the second and two more in the third for a 3-0 lead. Peyton Barnes had an RBI double that scored Miller (hit by pitch) with the first run. Miller laced an RBI double down the left field line to score David Janes (single) with the first run of the third inning followed by a bases loaded walk to Jake Lorenzini that scored Bisenius (hit by pitch).

Minot State responded with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the score at 3-3. The Beavers then came up with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pick up the 5-3 win.

Wayne State had eight hits in the game. Graveline and Janes each had two singles for WSC while Miller and Barnes each doubled.

Reliever Spencer Johnson (0-1) was the losing pitcher, charged with one run in one inning of work. Starter Charles Hasty pitched six innings and gave up eight hits and three runs with five strikeouts and two walks. Jordan Mehl worked one inning of relief and yielded one run on two hits.

Wayne State will visit Winona State Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. for an NSIC doubleheader.
