Upper Iowa scored the go-ahead goal 10 minutes into the second half as the host Peacocks edged Wayne State College 2-1 in Northern Sun Conference women’s soccer played Sunday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa. UIU is now 3-4 and 2-3 in the NSIC while WSC slips to 4-2-2 and 1-2-2 in league play.
The Wildcats opened the scoring near the 10 minute mark as sophomore Natalie Rech recorded her third goal of the season with an assist from freshman Sophie Ketchmark giving WSC a 1-0 lead at the 9:50 mark.
Upper Iowa evened the score with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half (35:10) when Christiana Atteberry found the back of the net, making it 1-1 at intermission.
The Peacocks scored the go ahead goal at the 55:28 mark of the second half when Brittany Beckman scored off a corner kick giving Upper Iowa the 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
Upper Iowa held a 15-13 edge in shots over WSC while both teams had six shots on goal. The Peacocks had one more corner kick than WSC, 5-4, while WSC was called for three more fouls than UIU 10-7. Upper Iowa was whistled for three offside calls in the contest.
Rech led WSC with a team-high four shots that included her third goal of the season. Karlee Hall and Calista Moch each had two shots for the Wildcats.
Senior goalkeeper Kylie Comba allowed two goals and was credited with four saves in the contest.
Wayne State will be at home next weekend, hosting Northern State Saturday and MSU Moorhead Sunday in NSIC contests starting at 1 p.m. each day at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
