York extends season on Pohl free throws

York extends season on Pohl free throws

GRAND ISLAND – It was gritty win for the York girls basketball team, edging the second seeded Hastings Tigers, 37-35 to advance to the B6 Subdistrict Final. Senior Hailee Pohl sent the Dukes to the final after making two free throws with two seconds to play.

After Hastings started the game with a quick bucket, York answered with eight straight points and controlled the first half. Most of their early success came on the hot shooting of Maddie Portwine who scored eight points in the first quarter. She finished with a game high 19 points including four treys. The Dukes opened up an eight point lead, but saw it vanish in the third quarter when Hastings made their first three baskets.

The Tigers eventually took two leads in the second half as Dacey Sealey scored eight points in third quarter. Once again Portwine made big buckets and Natalia Dick dominated in the paint on both ends of the floor. With the game tied and 24 seconds left to play, Pohl drove into the paint and drew the foul. Turnovers and free throws hurt York down the stretch. The Dukes turned the ball over 12 times and went 11-19 from the free throw line.

Dick contributed six points in the win for York while Pohl and Masa Scheierman each knocked in four points. Hastings was led by Sealy’s 16 points. Kamri Adler, Mariah Steiner and Sydni Sullivan each scored four in the losing effort.

Hastings saw their season come to an end and finishes with an 8-10 overall record. York improved to 10-12 and will face number one seed Northwest on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
