The weather was beautiful and there was a final score to match it for the WESTCO Zephyrs on Tuesday night at Cleveland Field as they beat Douglas, WY by the final of 15-4.
This was supposed to be a 9-inning game but the Z’s took care of business and sent everyone home after the top of the seventh with the mercy rule in effect.
After Douglas took an early 1-0 in the top of the first inning the Zephyrs responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the first frame. RBI’s in the inning came from Paul Panduro on a groundout to short, then Tate Carsen ripped a single to center scoring a run, and Izaiah Torrez capped off the three run first with a run scoring single.
The Z’s would score in every inning on Tuesday night. Solo runs in the second and third innings and then in the fourth it was left handed hitting lead-off man Jack Jones cranking a solo homer to straight away right field to make it 6-2.
After two runs in the fifth, WESTCO put this one away in the sixth inning by scoring seven times. Carsen continued his hot start to the season with a two run triple to right center field and later in the inning Panduro plated two with a single.
On the mound the Z’s used three different pitchers; Carsen started and went four innings while notching four strikeouts to pick up the win. Hunter McCollum followed with two innings of one run ball and then it was Jace Heimerman pitching the seventh to close out the win.
Carsen finished with two hits and three more RBI’s at the dish. Jones homered and drove in a pair and scored two runs. Just about everyone got into the act with WESTCO piling up 13 hits in the blowout win.
WESTCO is home again on Thursday night for a JR/SR doubleheader against the Alliance Spartans. The Express will play first and Coach Jeremiah Luber is expecting a start time of about 6 p.m. with the Zephyrs game then hoping to start at around 8 o’clock.
