Final weekend of CSG competition begins Friday
Lincoln-The final weekend of competition in the 2012 Cornhusker State Games begins Friday with the new sport of CrossFit's indoor events beginning at 9 a.m. at Cornhusker Crossfit, 33rd and Cornhusker in Lincoln. Electronic darts, foosball, pickleball and tennis juniors also begin Friday.
In all, 22 sports remain in the 65-sport festival. The overall number of participants has surpassed last year's total of 11,515 with a handful of sports still open for late entry.
The Underdogs, a team including former Huskers Caleb Walker, Marcus Perry, Joe McCray and Tony McCray, took the men's open basketball gold medal, while the Linomas, featuring sisters Nicole Kubik and Jami Hagedorn, repeated in the women's open division.
Lincoln's Mark Kennedy won his 8th open men's table tennis gold medal in nine years, surviving a marathon semifinal match against 22 year-old Sudeep Dotel of Omaha. The 53 year-old then bested Bellevue's Chris Fairbanks, 27, for the title. Fairbanks earlier spoiled a potential rematch of the 2011 final by knocking off Omaha's Himadri Mukherjee, the first to have beaten Kennedy after a streak of seven straight titles.
Six Nebraska high schools, including Lincoln Pius X, Lincoln Christian, Amherst, Lincoln Lutheran, Lincoln East and Kenesaw earned monetary awards as the top vote-getting schools in the Cornhusker State Games School Spirit Program. The awards were sponsored by the Nebraska State College System, which includes Chadron State, Peru State and Wayne State.
Hailey Schiermeyer, 12, of Uehling became the first female to win a wrestling gold medal in the 28 year history of the CSG when she defeated four-time CSG Iron Man Stone Mendez of Kearney in the finals of beach wrestling ages 11-13, 100 lb weight class. Last March, Schiermeyer won a U.S. female age-group title in the Wrestling Schoolboy/girl Nationals.
SportFest Field Goal contest drawing winners included Ethan Karr of Lincoln, who won a pair of tickets to a Husker home football game and George Brown of Lincoln, who won free Arby's for a year. Free Throw drawing winners included Delani Fahey of Ord, who won a Bison adjustable hoop and Jonny Martin of Lincoln, who won a pair of tickets to a Husker home basketball game.
