David first Husker selected

Linebacker Lavonte David was the first Nebraska player taken in the 2012 NFL Draft Friday night in New York City. David was taken with the 58th pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

David played two years for the Huskers after transferring from Ft. Scott Community College in Kansas.

The Miami, Fla. native established a single-season record with 152 tackles his junior year. He followed that up with a 133 tackle tackle effort his senior season. That earned him Big Ten Conference Linebacker of the Year honors.

It's the 10th straight year the Huskers have had a defensive player taken first in the draft. He was ranked the 3rd best player available by ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper as the second round opened Friday night.

Defensive tackle Jared Crick and defensive back Alfonzo Dennard have been projected as possible third round picks. Rounds four through seven will be held Saturday.
