Huskers qualify for third-straight NCAA tourney
The 17th-ranked Nebraska women's tennis team will make their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance next weekend as the team qualified for the 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament on Tuesday night. The Huskers will travel to Austin, Texas to compete in the four-team regional hosted by the University of Texas on May 11-12.
The first and second rounds in Austin will feature play between Nebraska (23-3), Texas (17-7), North Texas (18-6) and Wichita State (21-5). Nebraska will face North Texas in the first round of play, with the winner advancing to the second round to face the victor of the matchup between 11th-seeded Texas and Wichita State. The winning team out of the regional will advance to the final round of 16, which will be held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. on May 17-22.
North Texas qualifies for the NCAA Tournament after one of the program's most successful seasons in school history. The team was named Sun Belt Conference Champions and reached a program-record ranking of 40th during the season.
Nebraska will enter the tournament looking to cap one of the most successful seasons in school history. The team earned a program-record 23 wins under the guidance of 2012 Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year Scott Jacobson and achieved a program-record ranking of 17th.
A total of 64 teams qualified for the tournament, including six Big Ten conference teams. Each team will compete in a single-elimination tournament at 16 first- and second-round sites (four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion.
