BYU blanks Husker soccer team
Provo, Utah - The Nebraska soccer team was unable to get its offense clicking in their first road contest of the season as No. 6 Brigham Young, an Elite Eight qualifier from last season, picked up the 3-0 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Emma Stevens, who made three saves in a six-minute span midway through the first half, was aggressive in net early and denied the Cougars (2-0) a chance in the early minutes to keep a rowdy crowd at bay.
Senior Jordan Jackson, who led NU with three shots on goal, recorded the lone first-half shot on goal for the Huskers (2-1) in the fourth minute. Jackson gained the zone but BYU keeper Erica Owens made the stop from the top of the box to keep NU off the scoreboard.
In the 42nd minute of play, the Cougars broke the tie when Niki Fernandes issued a crossing pass in to the box and Elena Medeiros capitalized with a header amongst a crowd for the 1-0 edge.
The Cougars outshot NU 6-4 during the first 45 minutes, including a 4-1 shots on goal advantage. Stevens gave the Huskers momentum early in the second half when she made a diving stop to her right on a BYU penalty after a hand ball in the penalty area.
In the 51st minute, NU's Caroline Gray found herself with a great opportunity as she ran into the top right portion of the box but her shot sailed just high of the crossbar.
BYU increased its lead to 2-0 six minutes into the second half when Cloee Colohan headed the ball into the top-left corner of the net on an free-kick assist from Colett Jepson Smith. The Cougars made the final score 3-0 after a goal by Marissa Nimmer after an assist by Kyleigh Royall at the 85:36 mark of the match.
Brigham Young finished with a 14-9 shots advantage, while also notching a 10-4 edge in shots on net.
Nebraska soccer will attempt to bounce back when they return to action for a Labor Day Monday, Sept. 2 matchup against Utah State in Logan at 2 p.m. (Central).
