Huskers head to the Hoosier state

The No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team will travel to take on the No. 12 Purdue Boilermakers and the Indiana Hoosiers this weekend.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with the Boilermakers, 10-5. The Huskers posted a 1-1 record against Purdue in 2011, beating the Boilermakers 3-1 in Lincoln, but falling 3-0 in West Lafayette.

Purdue is 13-2 on the season and has a 4-0 Big Ten record. Purdue will face Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., after taking on the Huskers on Friday.

Last weekend Purdue hosted Northwestern and Illinois at home, topping the Wildcats 3-1 and the Fighting Illini 3-2.

Senior All-American Ariel Turner leads the Boilermakers on the year with 224 total kills and 4.23 kills per set. She was most recently named the Big Ten Player of the Week after averaging 4.9 kills on .288 hitting, 2.9 digs and 0.4 blocks per set over the weekend. She notched a double-double against the Wildcats, posting 19 kills and 17 digs. Turner also moved to fourth place all-time in kills at Purdue with 1,577.

Against Illinois, freshman Annie Drews recorded 13 kills while redshirt junior Catherine Rebarchak had 10 kills. Sophomore Kiki Jones added nine kills and a team-best three blocks. Redshirt junior Carly Cramer led the defense with 15 digs.

Against Northwestern, Turner had 19 kills and 17 digs, while Rebarchak added 13 kills and freshman Annie Drews downed 10. Jones posted nine kills and four blocks, while Anna Drewry had seven kills and a team-leading seven blocks.

Dave Shondell enters his 10th year at the helm of the Purdue volleyball program after leading the team to seven NCAA Tournament berths in the last eight years.

Indiana is 8-8 on the season and has a 0-4 Big Ten record. The Hoosiers will face Iowa on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m., before taking on the Huskers on Saturday.

Last weekend Indiana dropped two 3-1 contests to Illinois and Northwestern in Bloomington.

Junior Jordan Haverly leads the Hoosiers on the year with 242 total kills and 4.03 kills per set. Senior Kelci Marschall has 155 total kills on the year, notching 2.60 kills per set. Freshman Katie Gallagher has paced the Hoosier offense with 570 total assists, averaging 10.96 assists per set.

Against Northwestern, Haverly led the team with 23 kills in the match, hitting .386 on 44 swings.

Haverly and Marschall led Indiana against Illinois as they recorded 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

Sherry Dunbar is in her sixth season at the helm of the Hoosier volleyball program. She has a career winning percentage of .646.
