Former State Sen. and Lexington Mayor John Wightman passes

LEXINGTON – Long time public servant John Wightman of Lexington died on Thursday at the age of 78 after being transported to a local hospital.

Wightman attended Kearney State College, taught for one year in Dannenbrog then earned a law degree at UNL. He opened law offices in Lexington and Gothenburg

Wightman got involved in politics 1974 when he began his first term as a city councilman in Lexington. He served one term before going back to the same office in 1984 until 2000. During that time he served as Lexington’s mayor from 1992-1995.

In 2006 Wightman defeated Dick Pierce to win a seat in the Nebraska Legislature representing the state’s 36th district. He served two terms, he was unable to run for re-election in 2014 because of term limits.
