The Gering City Council Monday night gave approval to a staff request to withdraw their submission for federal disaster aid related to snow removal efforts during the March blizzard.

Last month, FEMA informed the city their claim for more than $100,000 in snow removal costs related to the storm did not qualify for federal assistance.

In their letter, FEMA officials said the state’s declaration was for a ‘severe winter storm, straight-line winds and flooding’, and while the winter storm portion did cover some snow issues in certain circumstances, the federal agency did not consider the March storm a ‘snow event’ for which opening streets and removal of snow was eligible for reimbursement.

With the claim rejection, FEMA told Gering city staff that withdrawal of their submission was the only action remaining available to them.

The withdrawal was approved unanimously on the consent calendar.
