Two occupants of a semi were treated for minor injuries following a train-semi collision late Tuesday morning about a half-mile east of Cozad. It was reported at 10:54am at an unmarked Union Pacific Railroad crossing. Dawson County Sheriff Ken Moody says the semi driver had observed a parked train a short distance down the tracks and proceeded through the crossing when it was struck by a second train that was traveling westbound.
Sheriff Moody says the driver was the semi was transported by Cozad Fire and Rescue to Cozad Community Hospital. The passenger was transported by private vehicle. Both had minor injuries. The semi with grain trailer was deemed a total loss. Damage to the train estimated at $7,000.
Sheriff Moody reminds drivers to “take a second look at every crossing”, especially trains parked on the tracks as you can’t always see what might be traveling on the other side of them.
