(AUDIO) Pender Seniors top Twin River in opening round of State Tournament

Syracuse-The Pender Seniors American Legion Baseball Team picked up a win in their first game of the Class C State Tournament in Syracuse on Saturday, defeating Twin River 5-2.

Twin River drew first blood in the top half of the 1st inning as Nolan Ramaekers drove in Brandon Miller with a two-out RBI Single to left field to put Twin River ahead 1-0.

The lead would be short lived though as the first 4 Pender batters set the tone for the game in the bottom of the 1st inning.

Brady Oliver led off with a single to center field before Lucas Vogt hit a double to the fence that drove in Oliver to tie the game at 1.

Will Gatzemeyer singled to advance Vogt to 3rd, and then stole 2nd base, at which time Vogt took off for home and scored to make it 2-1.

Devin Hegge then came up and doubled home Gatzemeyer to give Pender a 3-1 advantage after one.

Pender added two more runs in the 3rd inning as Hunter Ferguson hit one in the left center field gap in the alley and recorded an RBI Triple before coming home on an errant throw to 3rd. Austin Roth also scored on the play from 1st base.

Blake Booth scored in the 5th inning for Twin River as Zach Jarecki hit him in to cut the lead to 5-2, but Twin River couldn’t get any closer.

Chris Rutar earned a no decision in the game, going 3 1/3 innings, while giving up a run on four hits. Zach Hegge threw 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on five hits. Vogt picked up the save as he pitched a flawless 7th inning for Pender.

Jaxson Hinkle suffered the loss for Twin River, going the distance and giving up 5 runs on 7 hits.

Twin River outhit Pender in the game, 9-7.

Pender advances to take on Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. in the winner’s bracket in a game that will be carried on 107.9 the Bull. Twin River plays Syracuse in an elimination game Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
