Briar Cliff honored with two GPAC football awards

The Great Plains Athletic Conference announced this week’s football players of the week and two Briar Cliff Chargers earned awards with Greg Henry being named offensive player of the week and Jovon Woods taking home the defensive honors.

Henry, a junior running back, was responsible for 70 percent of the Cliff’s offensive yardage with 128 rushing yards and eight receiving yards. He opened the scoring with a 51-yard touchdown run on the first drive to put BC up early as the team defeated Midland 13-7 on the road. Henry also scored the other touchdown for the Chargers on the team’s final possession of the first half.

Woods, a senior defensive back, picked off two passes and helped the top scoring defense in the conference hold another opponent to single digits. His first interception set up Henry’s second touchdown and his second pick came in the final minutes of the contest to help seal the game. He also had a pass breakup in the end zone on a third down play by the Warriors.

The other weekly award went to Sean Fenelon of Jamestown. The Jimmies’ kicker earned special teams player of the week after kicking a game winning field goal in the fourth overtime against Concordia in extremely muddy conditions.
