The Great Plains Athletic Conference announced the results of the league’s preseason basketball coaches’ polls Friday. Briar Cliff is projected to finish fifth in the men’s standings and ninth on the women’s side.
The Chargers have placed in the top four of the men’s standings in five straight seasons, including taking third last year with a 14-6 record in the GPAC. The league’s coaches picked Morningside to repeat as champions with 98 points while Dakota Wesleyan picked up two first-place votes and was slotted in the second spot at 91 points. Jamestown (78 points) and Dordt (73) were the other teams picked ahead of BC (62).
The women’s team for the Blue and Gold was also picked to drop off as the Chargers finished in eighth in the standings last season as their 48 poll points were the ninth most. The last time Briar Cliff finished ninth or worse in the conference was the 2008-09 season. Last season the team went 9-13 in the GPAC. Concordia was overwhelmingly selected to win the league after a national championship campaign last year. Dordt, Dakota Wesleyan and Northwestern round out the top four selections made by the coaches.
The basketball season kicks off for the Cliff on Monday, October 28 when the women’s team travels to take on Dakota State at 6 p.m. in Madison, S.D. The first basketball game this season in the Newman Flanagan Center will be when the men host Graceland at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29. The first home contest for the ladies is a 7 p.m. tipoff against Saint Xavier on Friday, November 1. A November 16 doubleheader with Concordia will mark the start of GPAC play for the Blue and Gold.
