Briar Cliff Women drop contest at Concordia

BC women’s basketball opened the 2019-20 GPAC basketball season with a tough opponent Saturday – #1 Concordia, the defending NAIA DII national champions. Despite a one-point lead after the first quarter, the Cliff fell 113-59 to the Bulldogs.

Concordia led 8-7 at the 6:19 mark in the first quarter before scoring seven unanswered points to lead 15-7 with 4:41 left in the period and forcing a Briar Cliff timeout. After receiving a few coaching points, the Chargers then went on a 14-5 run to end the quarter and lead 21-20.

Alyssa Carley scored eight of her 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the contest and the Cliff shot 35% from the field in that time, compared to 25% by Concordia. The 21-point first quarter was the most productive of the game for the Chargers, while 20 points was the lowest of the quarters for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs responded with a 13-3 run to start the second quarter and held a 48-34 lead at halftime. A rough third quarter put the game out of reach for the Chargers as the Bulldogs outscored BC 33-7 in the first 10 minutes of the second half en route to the 59-point win.

Shannon Sokolowski was the most productive Charger, putting up a career-high 14 points to tie Concordia’s Taylor Farrel for a game-high. Breanna Allen pulled down a career-best six rebounds to lead all players and Carley and Madelyn Deitchler each added five boards. Payton Slaughter dished out a five assists, a career high.

As a team, the Cliff shot 34.5% from the field, 31.6% from the 3-point line and 59% from the charity stripe. The Bulldogs were 46.6% from field goal range, 35.2% from beyond the arc and 75% from the free throw line.

The Chargers will return to the Newman Flanagan Center to host Mount Marty Wednesday. Tipoff against the Lancers is set for 6 p.m
