OMAHA, Neb. — #7 Creighton raced to a 17-4 lead in the first five minutes and never trailed in an 89-53 win against Seton Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
The win was Creighton’s (9-2, 5-1 BIG EAST) fifth in a row this season, and third consecutive vs. Seton Hall (8-5, 5-2 BIG EAST).
Damien Jefferson had 16 of his team-high 19 points in the first half to spark a Bluejay team that made its first seven shots and finished the evening making a season-best 59.6 percent of its shots for the evening. Joining him in double-figures were Denzel Mahoney (14) and Marcus Zegarowski (11).
Sandro Mamukelashvili paced Seton Hall with 14 points. The Pirates shot 17-for-51 from the field (33.3 percent) and just 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from three-point range.
After the teams exchanged baskets on the first four trips of the game, Creighton unleashed a 13-0 run that moved the lead to 17-4 with 15:34 remaining in the first half. Zegarowski made pair of three-pointers while Mahoney hit another trey, and Jefferson canned a pair of jumpers during the flurry. Seton Hall never got closer than seven points the rest of the evening, and Creighton led 37-26 at the half.
The Bluejay lead remained in double-figures the entire second half, growing to 20 for the first time on a Mitch Ballock three-pointer with 14:37 left that put the hosts ahead 54-34. CU later embarked on a 15-0 run to stretch the margin to 82-42, with reserves Antwann Jones (8) and Alex O’Connell (5) contributing to all but two points in that burst. CU’s largest lead came at 89-47 after a triple from reserve center Jacob Epperson with 2:31 remaining, which marked CU’s biggest advantage of the season, before Seton Hall scored the game’s final six points.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. when it hosts St. John’s on FS1.
