Creighton Volleyball climbs to No. 11

OMAHA, Neb. — The Creighton Volleyball jumped two spots to a season-best 11th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top-25 poll released on Monday, October 14. The Bluejays also skyrocketed up eight places to 10th in the second official RPI rankings released by the NCAA on Monday.

The Bluejays improved to 13-3 after picking up a 3-0 win at DePaul on Friday, followed by a 3-2 win at former No. 10 Marquette. The Bluejays are now 6-0 in BIG EAST play and have won 29 consecutive matches against teams from the league.

No. 1 Baylor (15-0), No. 5 Nebraska (13-2) and No. 10 Washington (13-3) are the lone teams to beat the Bluejays thus far and have combined for a 41-5 record.

This week marks the 46th consecutive week the Bluejays have been ranked, the nation’s 10th-longest active streak. The Bluejays have now been ranked in 60 all-time polls, and every poll since Oct. 31, 2016. CU’s all-time best ranking in program history is No. 7, which came in the poll released on Aug. 28, 2017.

Baylor remained in the top spot in the poll, earning 61-of-64 first place votes. Stanford, Pitt, Texas and Nebraska remain second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Creighton’s BIG EAST rival, Marquette, fell from 10th to 12th after having its nine-match win streak snapped by the Bluejays.

Creighton also earned the No. 10 spot in the RPI rankings announced by the NCAA, jumping eight spots from a week earlier. That computes to the second-biggest leap of any top-25 RPI team from a week ago, trailing only Louisville (No. 20 to No. 11).

Last year’s team was No. 22 in the second official RPI rankings released on October 8. Creighton hasn’t been in the top-10 of the RPI since being 10th on Nov. 27, 2017, and hadn’t been in the top 10 in the second week of the RPI since 2013 (No. 7 on Oct. 14, 2013). The three teams to beat Creighton so far are also highly-regarded in the RPI, with No. 1 Baylor, No. 4 Nebraska and No. 6 Washington all in the top-6.

Creighton is 100-25 all-time when playing as a ranked team in the AVCA poll, including a 43-6 mark at home, where the Jays will be this weekend. The Bluejays host Butler at 7 p.m. on Friday before welcoming Xavier to D.J. Sokol Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m.
