Cyclones Draw Auburn In Big 12 / SEC Challenge

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball team will play at Auburn in the 2020 Big 12/SEC Challenge, the league offices announced Thursday. The matchup will take place Jan. 25 at Auburn Arena. Time and television information will be announced at a later date.

Auburn, which advanced to the Final Four last season, is led by Bruce Pearl. Pearl is entering his sixth season as head coach of the Tigers. Auburn lost its top three scorers from its 30-10 team, but returns Samir Doughty, who averaged 7.3 points and shot 42.5 percent behind the arc.

The game will be just the fourth overall between the teams and the first played at Auburn. Iowa State owns a 2-1 edge in the series, including a 99-70 win at Hilton Coliseum against the Tigers in the 2013 Big 12/SEC Challenge.

Iowa State is 3-3 all-time in the challenge, beating the Tigers (2013), Arkansas (2014) and winning at Mississippi (2019).  Iowa State is 5-5 all-time in challenge games (2-0 vs. Oregon State, 0-2 vs. California, 1-0 vs. Auburn, 1-0 vs. Arkansas, 1-0 vs. Mississippi, 0-1 vs. Texas A&M, 0-1 vs. Vanderbilt, 0-1 vs. Tennessee).

The Big 12 won the challenge a season ago and owns a 4-1-1 mark all-time against the SEC. Big 12 teams are 35-25 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge after going 6-4 last season. Iowa State was the only team in last year’s challenge to win on the road.
