IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team (9-14, 3-9) fell to Rutgers (8-15, 2-10) in three sets on Saturday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (25-23) | Junior Griere Hughes got the Hawkeyes started with four straight kills as Iowa took a 4-3 lead. The Hawkeyes held the advantage through 14 points, but the Scarlet Knights reeled three straight points to take the lead and force an Iowa timeout. Iowa trimmed Rutgers’ lead to one point off a solo block from Hughes as Rutgers called its first timeout with the Hawkeyes holding all the momentum. Iowa battled all the way to Rutgers’ match point, trailing 24-23, but an Iowa attack error gave Rutgers the first set.
SET 2 (25-19) | Iowa spotted Rutgers three points to start the second and the Hawkeyes began their comeback attempt with Hughes leading the way. Rutgers kept Iowa at bay and Iowa called its first timeout trailing 8-4. Out of the timeout, a three-point run for the Hawkeyes brought Iowa within one point, but consecutive attack errors gave the lead back to Rutgers. The lead allowed the Scarlet Knights to run away with the second set and Iowa headed to halftime looking for the reverse sweep.
SET 3 (25-19) | Iowa opened the third set on fire with three quick points to put the Scarlet Knights on their heels early. Iowa continued to keep its distance from Rutgers with kills from sophomore Amiya Jones and Hughes, but Rutgers inched back into the set and tied it at 13, taking the lead following an Iowa error. Iowa surrendered a five-point run and called a timeout, trailing 18-13. Iowa remained within reach and scattered kills from Jones and an ace from freshman Emma Lowes, but it was not enough as Iowa fell in straight sets.
Freshman Emma Lowes made her collegiate debut and recorded her first career ace.
