Iowa State sweeps TCU

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (12-6, 3-3 Big 12) snapped its two-match losing skid, as they swept TCU (6-10, 1-5 Big 12), 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-12) Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones were led on offense by Candelaria Herrera who put up 10 kills on the night on .667 hitting from the floor. Josie Herbst and Eleanor Holthaus weren’t far behind, as the two of them contributed eight kills apiece. On the defensive side of the net, Iowa State was led by Avery Rhodes who had six block assists with one solo block. Izzy Enna led the back row with 12 digs, as the Cyclones held the Horned Frogs to .093 hitting for the night.

Set One: Iowa State 25 TCU 23 
The first set saw a sloppy start by both teams, as they combined for five errors in the first ten points. Iowa State called timeout to calm itself when the score hit 9-6 TCU, and followed it up with a 4-0 run to take the lead 10-9. TCU was up by four at 20-16, and ISU then battled back and eventually took the lead at 22-21. The Cyclones gained set point and later won on a Candelaria Herrera kill, her fourth of the set, with a score of 25-23.

Set Two: Iowa State 25 TCU 23 
The second set saw a much cleaner start for Iowa State, as the Cyclones had five kills on nine swings, jumping out to a 8-3 lead. The Frogs battled back, with the help of three Cyclone errors, to tie the set at 13. TCU’s offense continued to click, as they hit .429 and used the momentum to take a 19-17 lead. The Cyclone defense stiffened, led by three Avery Rhodes blocks, as they rallied and gained set point and won on a Brooke Andersen kill, 25-23.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 TCU 12 
Set three saw another rough start as this time seven of the first 10 points were scored from errors and Iowa State found itself with a 7-3 lead. The Cyclones began to run away with things as they pushed the lead out to 18-10 following a Herrera kill. There was no looking back, as Iowa State gained match point and won following a block by Rhodes and Eleanor Holthaus, 25-12. The Cyclones hit .379 in the final set to put the Frogs to rest.

Players of the Match: 
Candelaria Herrera and Avery Rhodes. Iowa State’s middle blockers led the way Wednesday night. The two players combined to hit .500 on the night with 17 kills; Herrera had ten kills while Rhodes had seven. The two also combined for 8 block assists, with Rhodes tallying one solo block.

Iowa State will head to Norman and face the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday. The match’s first serve is set at 6 p.m.
