Iowa State Volleyball falls at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Oklahoma – Iowa State (12-7, 3-4 Big 12) struggled defensively as they fell 3-1 (25-15, 25-12, 23-25, 25-18) to Oklahoma (13-5, 5-2 Big 12) Saturday night at McCasland Field House.

ISU had a rough evening in serve and pass, as Oklahoma fired 10 service aces and hit over .340 as a team in three of the four sets. In defeat, ISU was led by Eleanor Holthaus, who notched a double-double of 14 kills and 17 digs. Izzy Enna recorded 15 digs, while Avery Rhodes had five blocks.

Set One: Oklahoma 25 Iowa State 15
Despite claiming the first three points of the set, Iowa State’s offense struggled to get going, as Oklahoma was able to get some early momentum, using a 4-0 run to move ahead 10-5. Piper Mauck had a strong run behind the service line to get ISU back within two, but it was not long before Oklahoma was ahead again by five at 13-8 on a Sooner block. Iowa State struggled on both sides of the ball, with the attack finishing the first hitting .000, while the Sooners hit .289. Oklahoma claimed the first set when Sarah Maras killed at 25-15.

Set Two: Oklahoma 25 Iowa State 12
The Cyclones’ struggles continued to begin the second, as OU claimed the first seven points of the set. Iowa State struggled mightily in serve and pass, conceding seven service aces in OU’s first 18 points of the set. While there was an improvement from the Cyclone attack, which hit .129 for the set, the Sooners continued to thrive in attack at .281 hitting. Brianna Kadiku wrapped up the second for OU with a kill at 25-12.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 23
ISU got off to a steadier start in the third, with an Eleanor Holthaus kill tying it at 6-6. However, Oklahoma eventually started to roll and moved ahead 10-6. The Cyclones got back within one on a Josie Herbst ace at 15-14, and finally tied it back up at 20-20 on an Avery Rhodes kill.  Iowa State finally moved ahead on a block by Annie Hatch and Rhodes of Kadiku at 23-22. ISU got to set point first on another block at 24-23, and converted it when Candelaria Herrera and Holthaus combined to deny Sarah Sanders at 25-23.

Set Four: Oklahoma 25 Iowa State 18
Iowa State’s defense continued to do work to get things back together, helping the visitors get out to a 4-1 lead. Iowa State led by five at 8-3, but Oklahoma began to work its way back into the set and was able to go on a 5-0 run to tie things up at 9-9. Holthaus hit one into the net to put OU ahead 12-11, and then went on a 4-0 run to get ahead 16-12. While Iowa State held the Sooners to .133hitting for the set, Iowa State struggled in attack, hitting only .104 for the frame. Oklahoma wrapped up the match when Ashlynn Dunbar killed at 25-18.

Iowa State is off in the upcoming mid-week and will be back in action next Saturday at Hilton Coliseum against Kansas State. First serve between the Cyclones and Wildcats will be at 8 p.m. Fans who have a ticket to next Saturday
