INDIANAPOLIS — Sixth-seeded Ohio State rode a 29-point first quarter to an 87-66 Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal victory over the No. 3 seeded University of Iowa women’s basketball team Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The Hawkeyes led 1-0 and the game was tied at three before the Buckeyes went berserk.
Ohio State made three 3-pointers during a 19-0 run that spanned nearly seven minutes to build a 22-3 lead at the 3:14 mark. Ohio State made six first-quarter 3-pointers and shot 66.7 percent from the field. Iowa made 4-of-13 field goals in the first 10 minutes.
The Buckeyes stayed hot, making 7-of-12 field goals in the second quarter to push its totals to eight 3-pointers and a 63 percent field goal clip in the first half as it led 48-31 at the break.
The Buckeyes opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers to force an Iowa timeout, but it didn’t slow Ohio State down. The lead was pushed to 30 with 2:03 left and to as many as 34 with 48 seconds left in the third quarter.
Ohio State had a higher field goal percentage (50.0 to 34.9), made two more 3-pointers (11 to 9), and the Buckeyes won the rebounding battle, 43-27.
Stat of the Game
It was a bad game for the Hawkeyes to post their lowest field goal percentage of the season. Iowa finished with a 34.9 field goal percentage in the game, making just 22-of-63 field goals. There was a lid on the basket as Czinano, the national leader in field goal percentage was just 4-of-14 in the contest.
Ohio State, meanwhile, made six 3-pointers in the first quarter to match Thursday’s production in a second round win over Minnesota. The Buckeyes made 11 3s for the game — their second most in a game this season.
The Hawkeyes will now await their postseason destination. NCAA Tournament brackets will be released on March 16 at 6 p.m. (CT)
