“Payton provides an immediate boost to our pitching staff,” said Porter. “He knows the physical and mental aspects of pitching and has a unique ability to teach those around him. He understands our culture and we are thrilled to have him as our pitching coach.”
Kinney helped lead his team to The Summit League Regular-Season and Tournament Championships, as well as the program’s first NCAA Division I Regional appearance. He was also the first All-America honoree of the Division I era for the Maverick baseball program. As The Summit League Pitcher of the Year and Tournament MVP, Kinney finished his senior campaign with a 1.96 ERA, an 11-2 record and 111 strikeouts through 115.0 innings. He also garnered All-Summit First Team, Academic All-Summit, Summit League All-Tournament and Summit League Pitcher of the Week honors three times this year.
“I am very happy to continue my journey within the Maverick family and have the opportunity to work with Coach Porter and Coach Brian Strawn,” said Kinney. “We have a fantastic culture here and it is exciting to help build upon that. I look forward to mentoring and working with our pitching staff.”
