Despite early morning rain and breezy conditions more like late fall, top runners were able to re-write the record books in the 2019 Monument Marathon.
It was a family affair in the full marathon, as a couple from Lingle, WY had the fastest times in the men’s and women’s categories.
Joe Wilson shaved nearly five minutes off the men’s course record shattering Dylan Stansbury’s 2:49:21 in 2018 with a time of 2:44:34. His wife, AnnMarie, also had an impressive performance, cutting nearly three minutes off the women’s course record with a time of 3:18:27. Jennifer Malmberg held the previous mark with a time of 3:21:11.
In the half-marathon, Alejandro Garcia set the men’s top mark for the second year in a row with a time of 1:13:58, shaving 31 seconds off his 2018 record mark. Heather Townsend was the women’s champion with a time of 1:39:03.
In the 5K, Mitch Bern had the fastest men’s time of 19:19, while the women’s champion had a time of 25:27 by Anna Cheek.
More than 525 runners took part in this year’s Monument Marathon, which race organizers say was the second-largest ever for participation. Runners came from across the nation, from New York to California, with many reaching personal milestones such as their 50th marathon, or being able to mark off one more state in a quest to run a full event in every state of the nation.
in 2020, race organizers will be adding a three-stage half-marathon relay, with a different runner on each leg about as long as a 10K, an event many participants and others have been asking about.
