OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha women’s basketball secured a 70-64 win over Morgan State behind the 21-point performance of Claire Killian Sunday afternoon in Baxter Arena.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Killian led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds on 6-for-11 shooting with a trio of 3-pointers. Rayanna Carter followed with 13 points, five assists and two steals. Mikaela Ekdahl tallied nine points with five assists. Morgan State’s Chelsea Mitchell led her team with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Three other Bears had double-digit scoring efforts in Dahnye Redd (13), Dezyree Morales (12) and Jihayah Chavis (11).
Omaha shot 22-of-46 from the field (47.8%), 6-of-13 from deep (46.2%) and 20-30 from the line (66.7%). Morgan State went 23-of-64 (35.9%), 3-of-14 from three (21.4%) and 15-19 at the charity stripe (78.9%).
• Killian’s 21 points matches her career-high for the second time. She previously had 21 points against Oral Roberts last season on Dec. 30, 2018.
• Carter tied her career-high of five assists for the second time.
• Ekdahl now has two-straight five-assist games.
• Omaha improves to 1-0 against Morgan State.
• The Mavericks also picked up their first Division I win and win inside Baxter Arena this season.
INSIDE THE FIRST HALF
A tough first quarter saw the Mavericks down by five (13-8) in the first 10 minutes of play. The Mavericks, however, bounced back and went on a 5-0 spurt to open the second and tied it up on a pair of Carter free throws. A 13-2 run followed and gave Omaha its first lead of the game at the 1:44 mark (26-22). That score stayed until the half, as the Mavericks held Morgan State to a 5:54 scoreless drought going into the third.
INSIDE THE SECOND HALF
Killian’s three ball gave the Mavericks a 33-28 lead at the 7:35 mark in the third. The Mavericks kept their foot on the pedal and increased the lead to double-digits at the 4:04 mark when Ella Ogier knocked down a three and made it 42-32. After three, Omaha led by eight, 49-41. The final quarter saw a late push by Morgan State when the Bears went on a 5-0 run. With 1:22 to go, Morgan State cut the Maverick lead to just one, 63-62. Omaha, however, secured late trips to the line and capitalized on them, draining six of their final seven for the win.
The Mavericks gear up for a three-game road stretch in the southeast. Omaha travels to Northern Kentucky for a Nov. 21 matchup at 6 p.m. (CST), followed by two games against VCU and Mississippi Valley State from Nov. 29-30 at the Southern Mississippi Classic Tournament.
