PENDER – Pender ran for nearly 300 yards on their way to a 46-14 at home against Winside on Friday night, Sept. 11, in a game aired on 107.9 The Bull.
The Pendragons started the game with the ball, and struck first when Braxton Volk connected with Chase Hofmeister on a 36-yard touchdown pass. The PAT made it 7-0 Pender.
The Wildcats answered back in just one play, as Gabe Escalante took the handoff 65 yards for the score. The two point conversion made it 8-7 Winside.
But Pender were respond on their next possession after starting on the Wildcats’ side of midfield. The drive ended on a seven yard run by Dylan Vogt. The PAT by Vogt was again good, and Pender now led 14-8 with 5:19 in the first quarter.
This is where the Pendragons started to take over.
Winside was turned away on a fourth down attempt inside their own 25.
Volk threw his second touchdown pass of the night, a seven hit strike to Vogt. The PAT missed, and Pender led 20-8. This would be the score at the end of the first quarter, after the teams traded punts, a Winside interception and a Pender failed fourth down try.
The next score of the game was on a 21 yard field goal by Vogt with one second left in the second quarter, giving the Pendragons a 23-8 advantage going into halftime.
Winside opened the second half with the ball, and again failed to convert on fourth down, giving Pender the ball on the Winside 26.
The drive ended with Volk’s third score of the evening, a two-yard run. The PAT again missed and Pender was up 29-8 with 9:18 in the third.
Winside had a punt and another turnover on downs on their next two offensive possessions, while Pender scored on their next two, a 29-ard field goal by Vogt and a 25-yard run by Vogt. After the run and PAT, Pender was up 39-8 with 1:30 left in the third quarter.
Winside was finally able to score again, when they capped off a 57-yard drive with a six yard run by Escalante. The two point try failed, making it 39-14 Pender.
The Pendragons had one more scoring drive left in them however, as Volk complete his third touchdown pass of the night, a seven yarder to Hofmeister. The PAT was good, putting Pender ahead 46-14 with 6:15 left in the game.
Winside punted with 4:16 left and Pender was able to run out the remainder of the clock, preserving the win.
Volk was 7-11 passing for 92 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for a score.
Vogt ran the ball 15 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns, and also caught three passes for 21 yards and a score. Caleb Trimble carried 19 times for 106 yards.
Hofmesiter had three catches for 56 yards and two scores.
As a team, the Pendragons ran for 294 yards.
Pender is now 2-1 on the season and travels to Bloomfield next Friday.
